Kerala has humid equatorial tropic climate. Kerala experiences heavy rains almost throughout the year. Summer lasts from mid-February to mid-May. The tropical sun is really hot and temperatures can go up to 35°C in the afternoons. The monsoon is in place from mid-May until early September. The North-East Monsoon winds bring heavy showers. Winter is mild and lasts from about mid-October to early February. Heavy rains occur from the last week of September until early November, due to the retreat of the South-East monsoon.

Alappuzha Beach

Alappuzha beach is one of the most popular spots in the district of Alappuzha. Its beautiful garden on the shore gives an exclusive sight. Backwaters

One night cruise on the backwaters of the Alappuzha is one of the most popular cruises offered. A round trip, in which you board the boat at Alappuzha and disembark at Alappuzha after having spent the night in the tranquillity of the Backwaters. Various canals, lagoons, and waterways surround Kumarakom's small cluster of islands. These numerous water ways make up what is known as the Backwaters. Tourists love to rent a houseboat here.

Arthunkal St Andrew's Forane Church

Located 6kms south west from Cherthala and 22 km north of Alappuzha, Arthunkal is a small beautiful coastal village famous for the St. Sebastian's feast at the St. Andrews Forane Church here. The Church better known as Arthunkal church, is an important Christian pilgrim center established by Portuguese missionaries.

Krishnapuram Palace

The Krishnapuram Palace was built during the reign of Marthanda Varma, a Travancore king. This palace is noted for its typical Kerala architecture, with gabled roof, dormer windows and narrow corridors. Here you will find the famous mural kept in the western end of the ground floor, called ‘Gajendra Moksham’ which is the largest mural in Kerala.

Fort Kochi

Kodanad

One of the largest elephant capturing centres of South India. In 1977 the elephant capturing came to an end, but the elephant kraal and training centre are still there intact.

Willingdon Island

A manmade island named after Lord Willingdon a former British Viceroy to India. Cochin Harbour, Southern Naval Command, Best hotels in the city, Port Trust head quarters, major trading centres etc. are situated at Willingdon Island.

How To Reach

The airport continues to be the naval air station, while the main airport has been moved to Nedumbassery, 30kms north-east of Cochin. Most of the trains now terminate at Ernakulam Junction instead of Cochin Harbour Terminus.

Dutch Palace

It is also known as Mattancherry Palace, built by the Portuguese and presented to the Raja of Kochi in 1555 A.D. Its interiors are decorated with murals from the Ramayana and there are some lively displays of royal costumes and palanquins.

Munnar

Munnar is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India, Anamudi, which towers over 2695 m. Among the exotic flora found in the forests and grasslands here is the Neelakurinji. This flower that bathes the hills in blue every twelve years.

Vagamon

Situated at an elevation of 1100 metres above sea level, Wagamon is called the trekker's paradise because it is an ideal place for trekking and a beautiful tourist spot surrounded by the greenery of tea plantations, meadows, valleys and dales. It is about 60 km from Kottayam. The other attraction of this place is Kurisumala, a sky-scraping mountain with a small church on its peak.

Achankovil

Situated about 80 kms from Punalur is an important pilgrim center. The Sastha temple here, situated amidst dense forest. The two important festivals of this temple are Mandala Pooja and the festival held at 'Revathi'. The two notable features of the festival are the Therotam (chariot festival) and Pushpabhishekam (offering of flowers). In no other temple of the South India are flowers offered to the deity so lavishly as at Achankovil.

Thenmala

Thenmala is the meeting point of Kollam-Shencottah road and Trivandrum-Shencottah road, surrounded by dense forest, 66 kms east of Kollam. There are a large number of rubber and tea plantations in Thenmala. Timber of all varieties are exported from here to all parts of the country. Themala Dam site is open for tourists. Eco tourists center is situated at Thenmala. All buses passing through Kollam-Shencottah road stop at Tenmala. There is also a Railway Station here.

Sasthamcotta Lake

Sasthamcotta is an attractive village situated about 19 kms. from Kollam Town. It is a beauty spot, a health resort and a centre of pilgrimage. The extensive freshwater lake here, is said to be the biggest of its kind in Kerala. Water supply to the Kollam town is met by purifying the water from this lake. Buses are frequently operated to Sasthamcotta, which can truly be called as Queen of Lakes.

Payyambalam Beach

The long secluded beach of Payyambalam is situated on the coastal line of Kannur, around 2 km from the town. There is a well laid out garden and a massive sculpture of mother and child erected by the famous sculptor Kanayi Kunchiraman which adds to the beauty of the beach.

Ezhimala

Ezhimala, the capital of the ancient Mooshika kings, is considered to be an ancient historical site. It is a conspicuous, isolated cluster of hills, forming a promontory, 38 kms. north of Kannur.

Snake Park

The Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu is situated 18 kms. Away from Kannur town. It Is one of the known snake parks in the country. Forts

Thalassery Fort and St. Angelos are the important forts in Kannur. St. Angelo Fort is located 3 km from Kannur on the coast of the Arabian sea. The fort is separated by a strong sea wall from the sea and behind the fort, there is a pathway stretching a kilometre or two into the sea. The imposing historical monument, Thalasseri fort, situated 22 km from Kannur, stands on a rocky cliff, right on the Thalasseri beach. Thalassery was the first settlement of the British East India Company on the western coast.

Arakkal Museum

Arakkal Kettu, a palace of historical significance, was the residence of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas, the only Muslim royal family of Kerala which ruled parts of the coast and Lakshadweep Island. The Arakkal family played a prominent role in the history of Malabar. The museum is managed by the Arakkal Family Trust and to visit the museum there is a nominal entry fee.

Bekal Fort

Bekal, an important tourist destination of Kasargod is located on the seashore of Pallikara village at a distance of 12kms south of the town. The largest and best preserved fort in the State. The archaeological significant Bekal fort and the beautiful Bekal fort beach are the major attraction of the place.

Puliyamkulam Park

Globally acknowledged as an ecological miracle, Kareem's Forest Park alias Puliyamkulam Park is the only man made forest in Kerala, located at Puliyamkulam near Parappa at a distance of 30kms from Nileswaram and 23kms east of Kanhangad town.

Cheruvathur Kota Palli

Cheruvathur Kota Palli is a little Muslim shrine located within the ruined Dutch fort in the veeramala hills at Cheruvathur, 10kms from Nileshwaram. It was built in memory of an Arab sage belonged to the time of Malik Ibn Dinar.

Kumarakom

A birdwatcher's haven, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, covers an impressive expanse of 14 acres. A large variety of different birds can be found at the sanctuary at any given time. Numerous migratory birds even from places like Siberia visit the sanctuary.

The Vembanad Lake

Kumarakam: It is 16kms from Kottayam town. Bharananganam Church

Also known as Anakkallu Palli is an important pilgrim centre in Kottayam district. The mortal remains of blessed sister Alphonsa who died on 28th July 1948, is kept there. Thousands of devotees come here on 28th July every year to pray on her death anniversary. Bharanarganam is 5kms from Pala.

Erumeli

At Erumeli, there is a famous mosque in the name of Vavar, a friend of Lord Ayyappa. The Chandanakkudam festival is celebrated here in January every year. This coincides with the Makaravilakku of Sabarimala. At night there is an attractive procession with caparisoned elephants and panchvadyam. This is an important festival which exudes the spirit of Hindu-Muslim unity.

Beypore

Kappad Beach

Pazhassiraja Museum

Situated 5 kms from the City atop the east hill, Pazhassiraja Museum exhibits the historic past of Kozhikode. It is named after the Great Freedom fighter Pazhassiraja Kerala Varma Thampuran of Padinjare Kovilakom of the Kottayam royal family, who is known as the ‘Lion of Kerala’. It is the Pazhassiraja who had introduced the guerrilla warfare in Kerala.

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary

Situated 19 km away from the city, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is one of the most attractive bird sanctuaries in Kerala. It is home to 100 species of native birds and over 60 varieties of migratory birds.

Thikkoti Light House

Thikkoti Light House is one of the most interesting monuments steeped in history. There is a very interesting history concerning Thikkoti Light House. Legend has it that the Thikkoti Light House was built on the remains of a shipwreck that was from a boat that crashed near the rocky shore. Thus, Thikkoti Light House is a fearful reminder of that accident.

Thirunavaya

Thirunavaya is a place of great historical and religious significance. Thirunavya is situated 8 km from Tirur on the banks of Bharathappuzha, where 'Mamankam' was conducted. Efforts are being made to construct a Mamankam Museum at Tirunnavaya. The famous Navamukunda Temple which is said to have been founded by nine saints is a famous pilgrim centre.

Nedumkayam

Nedumkayam 20 k.m away from conolley's plot, is famous for thick forest. From the wooden Rest House built during the British period, one can watch elephants and herds of deer moving around on the other side of the river. The elephant training centre also attracts travellers.

Kadampuzha Bhagavathy Temple is situated at Kadampuzha, 30 km from Malappuram on Thrissur-Kozhikkode highway 3 km north of Vettichira attracts hundreds of devotees far and near.
